Yusmadi was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1999. Prior to joining Fahda Nur & Yusmadi, he was a partner at William Leong & Co., The Chambers of Kamarul Hisham, Hasnal Rezua & Yusmadi and Yusmadi & Co. Yusmadi was trained at leading and established law firms in Malaysia namely, Skrine & Co., Zaid Ibrahim & Co. and Hisham, Sobri & Kadir in corporate, commercial, criminal and Islamic related matters be it contentious and non-contentious matters.

Background

Yusmadi was born in Balik Pulau, Penang. In 1998, he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the International Islamic University Malaysia where he studied common law and Islamic law. In 2006, he was nominated as the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow for Law & Human Rights andcompleted postgraduate studies at Washington College of Law where his passion for human rights flourished. Following this, Yusmadi founded the Malaysia America Friendship Alumni Association (MAFAA), an umbrella organization of American scholars.

A legal practitioner with an international mindset, he was appointed to many inter- parliamentarian committees including the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Malaysia-European Union, the Malaysia-South Korea Union and Malaysia-Indonesia Union. His human rights activism at the local and international level was duly recognized when he was selected for the International Visitors Leadership Program for Multi-Regional Human Rights Advocacy Programme in the US in 2004. Yusmadi is a prolific writer and his views on law and politics are sought after by both print and electronic media in Malaysia.

In the 12th Malaysian general election, Yusmadi was elected as Member of Parliament of Malaysia for Balik Pulau, Pulau Pinang and was also appointed as member to the Special Parliamentary Committee for Anti-Corruption by the King of Malaysia.

Yusmadi specializes in public interest litigation and criminal defense cases. He has been involved as a leading counsel and co-counsel in many high profile civil and criminal cases, involving Malaysia’s corporate figures, celebrities and politicians.

In August 2018, Yusmadi was appointed the Honourable Senator of the Upper House (Dewan Negara) of Malaysia and currently is Chairman to the Senate’s Reform Committee. In 2019, he was Adjunct Professor to the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization  (ISTAC) of the International Islamic University Malaysia.
